Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee - 1619 Words

An Atticus Finch in today’s society is an uncommon occurrence; the Mayella’s and Bob Ewells are rarities also, hopefully. The rest of society fall somewhere in between; we are the Tom Robinsons, the Scouts, the Jems, the Dills, or even Boo Radley. We as people are observers. We scrutinize people with inimitable qualities, such as Atticus, and attempt to mimic them in order to mold our own characters accordingly; we see people like Bob Ewell and hope we’ll never be like them, discarding those attributes in the process. To Kill A Mockingbird is essentially about human nature; about learning the difference between what is right and wrong, and getting to know an individual before judging them. The synopsis might sound overly simplistic, but†¦show more content†¦For Scout and Jem, entertainment comes from their imaginations and the stories that they make up about the Radley family down the street. Their games are hide and seek and playing on a tire swing. Lif e then was simple and uncomplicated and worlds away from how kids grow up today. However, though childhood is drastically different than it was 80 years ago many of the life lessons and experiences shared by Jem and Scout are still prevalent in children today as the world seems to be conspiring to steal their innocence. When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sake. But don t make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles em (Lee,116). Atticus is speaking to his brother Jack about him talking to Scout earlier. Atticus is trying to get the message across that you need to answer a child when they ask a question, without making it seem like a life threatening issue, or trying to get the child off topic from the question. When avoiding a question the child’s thoughts only get cloudier, and their questions begin to haunt them. The quote ties into the theme because it shows how as Jack got older his ability to judge how children thought became clouded, and instead of understanding that he needed to be direct with Scout, he ended up confusing her more. His answer to her questions were more bias to one that an adult would understand, and showed how his own innocence had been

Romeo And Juliet Tragic Essays - Characters In Romeo And Juliet

Romeo And Juliet Tragic It is known that in Shakespeare's tragedies main characters die in the end, and in his comedies people marry. Since Romeo and Juliet are a tragedy, Romeo and Juliet are going to die in the end. Some events have to lead to their deaths, and someone makes these events happen. The person(s) who started it all and did something that led to all the other events that caused the death of "a pair of star-crossed lovers". The Capulets and Montagues would be most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because if their ancestors didn't start the fighting, and they didn't continue it, nothing terrible would have happened. The first lines of the book tell us about the hate and envy between the two houses. Choir: "Two households, both alike in dignity, From ancient grudge to new mutiny,". The choir tells us that the whole conflict started a long time ago with really little things, and then grew into huge fights involving many people. No leader of either household ever though about making peace, they were all too busy to spoil everything for the rival family. Only after the death of their children they realized how wrong they were. Romeo and Juliet first meet each other at a party at the Capulets' house. They fall in love with each other at the first sight without knowing that they are from rival houses, and when they do learn about it, it is too late. Juliet says: "My only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late!". Juliet realizes that it was a mistake to fall in love with Romeo, because he is one of the people she should watch out for. He is her first and only love, but he is an enemy of her family. Luckily for Romeo, Juliet is smart, and such dumb thing as unreasonable hate between their parents wouldn't stop her from loving Romeo and getting married with him. She is sorry that their families are enemies, though, because everything would be much easier if they weren't. So this is the first time when the hate between Capulets and Montagues becomes an obstacle to Romeo and Juliet's happiness. Only after their children die, do the Montague and Capulet come to their senses? The Prince accuses them of killing Romeo and Juliet: " . . . Capulet, Montague, See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, That heavens finds means to kill your joys with love!". The Prince makes them see how wrong they were all the time, that all because of their hate, because they couldn't let their children love each other, Romeo and Juliet died. After that, Capulet and Montague make peace, and Montague even says that he will make a gold statue of Juliet, but what is that going to do, it is too late, nothing will bring their children back. It is totally Capulets' and Montagues' fault that Romeo and Juliet died. If they didn't hate each other so much, they would let their children marry, and they would be able to live happily ever after. There was only one person that realized how unreasonable the fighting was and even tried to stop it, and he was Benvolio. Benvolio was a Montague, but the Capulets didn't have a peacemaker such as Benvolio. They only had Tybalt, whose only goal was to destroy all the Montagues. Also we don't really know how Romeo and Juliet's parents would have reacted if they had known that their children love each other. Romeo and Juliet didn't even try to tell them about love between them because they were afraid that their parents wouldn't understand them, but maybe they would. The problem is, we don't know, because Capulet and Montague learned about their children's love when they were already dead. It is still mostly Capulets' and Montagues' fault that Romeo and Juliet died, but maybe it was just their fate to die. Romeo and Juliet A Tragic Play It is known that in Shakespeare's tragedies main characters die in the end, and in his comedies people marry. Since Romeo and Juliet are a tragedy, Romeo and Juliet are going to die in the end. Some events have to lead to their deaths, and someone makes these events happen. Shadow essays

Shadow essays Twenty-five years ago, after Richard Nixon resigned the presidency, Gerald Ford promised a return to normalcy. "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over," President Ford declared. But it was not. The Watergate scandal, and the remedies against future abuses of power, would have an enduring impact on presidents and the country. In Shadow, Bob Woodward takes us deep into the administrations of Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton to describe how each discovered that the presidency was forever altered. With special emphasis on the human toll, Woodward shows the consequences of the new ethics laws, and the emboldened Congress and media. Powerful investigations increasingly stripped away the privacy and protections once expected by the nation's chief executive. Using presidential documents, diaries, prosecutorial records and hundreds of interviews with firsthand witnesses, Woodward chronicles how all five men failed first to understand and then to manage the inquisitor ial environment. "The mood was mean," Gerald Ford says. Woodward explains how Ford believed he had been offered a deal to pardon Nixon, then clumsily rejected it and later withheld all the details from Congress and the public, leaving lasting suspicions that compromised his years in the White House. Jimmy Carter used Watergate to win an election, and then watched in bewilderment as the rules of strict accountability engulfed his budget director, Bert Lance, and challenged his own credibility. From his public pronouncements to the Iranian hostage crisis, Carter never found the decisive, healing style of leadership the first elected post-Watergate president had promised. Woodward also provides the first behind-the-scenes account of how President Reagan and a special team of more than 60 attorneys and archivists beat Iran-contra. They turned the Reagan White House and United States intelligence agencies upside down investigating the president with orders to ...

Thomas Aquinas Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Thomas Aquinas - Essay Example Through the scriptures, God has several definitions that vary across cultures and religions. He is an all-powerful person who can fill a person with the Holy Spirit and the power to differentiate right from wrong. According to Aquinas, many preachers describe God every Sunday at congregation, but the fact is that, each religion has its own preacher, with their own message about the existence of God and his abilities. That calls for the need of a universal language about God because of the disagreements that occur because of his various descriptions in the society. The argument about the nonexistence of God is not reasonable, according to Thomas Aquinas. The bible, Quran, and other religious scriptures have received considerable bashing over the messages they perpetrate, especially on the topic of violence. Considering the traits God is given, this is not supposed to be the case because He is not a violent person. For that reason, the concept of a special theory arises that can outline the regulations, laws, way of life, or the performance of required acts in observance to
